Department of Conservation
The Department of Conservation (DOC) works to protect tūturuatu (shore plovers) on Waikawa/Portland Island, home to over a third of the world’s population. DOC translocates birds, manages biosecurity, and removes threats like Darwin ants. Despite challenges, regular monitoring and predator control help the plovers thrive.

Haumanu Tū Ora
Gisborne District Council, Ngāti Oneone Hapu, Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki Iwi and Rongowhakaata Iwi are working collaboratively on exciting initiatives to assist the communities in reconnecting with their local awa, waterways, ecosystems, flora and fauna.
